Overview

Less polished and more laid back than Phoenix, Tucson is a desert city with a deep sense of place, older than Arizona itself and shaped by Mexican and Native American food and culture. It is one of the few American cities named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, and the Mexican food is a real reason to come. Saguaro National Park sits at both edges of town, Sabino Canyon is a favorite escape, and the Desert Museum is a well-run mix of zoo and garden. The gem show in winter draws big crowds.

About 550,000 people live here. Rents and home prices are moderate, and the University of Arizona keeps the Fourth Avenue area lively. Summers are severe, with heat over 105 degrees, and monsoon storms bring flash floods. Crime is above average, concentrated in parts of the south side, and hikers should bring plenty of water and watch for rattlesnakes.

Violent crime rate roughly 700-800 per 100,000 (approximate, not directly verified), above the US average but concentrated in specific areas. Common visitor risks: car break-ins, theft from vehicles at trailheads, drunk driving. Hospitals: Banner University Medical Center Tucson, Tucson Medical Center, St. Joseph's Hospital, Northwest Medical Center. Hazards: extreme summer heat above 105F, heat stroke and dehydration, monsoon flash floods (July to September), rattlesnakes, scorpions, cactus spines, valley fever, wildfires in the mountains

                  Local notes

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

Parts of South Tucson (a separate city) along South 6th Avenue, some blocks along South Nogales Highway and Drexel, parts of the Miracle Mile motel strip and the far south side have higher property and violent crime. Avoid hiking at midday in summer and avoid desert trails alone without water
