Pick the ferry, and Vallejo, the northern edge of the Bay Area, gets you to San Francisco in about 55 minutes. The city has about 123,000 people, a long naval history at Mare Island, and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, which draws crowds much of the year.
Day to day it is a working, mixed city with a walkable waterfront, hillside neighborhoods like Glen Cove, and the upscale Hiddenbrooke community. You can tour the Mare Island museum and historic buildings, stroll the waterfront, or shop the year-round farmers market. Compared with most of the Bay Area it is more affordable, but it is still expensive by national standards. Be realistic about safety. Violent and property crime run above the California average, and car break-ins and vehicle theft are the usual trouble, including in theme park lots.

1.0
Poor · Data-based
About 3,000 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.
Safety overview
Violent crime rate is above the California average, roughly 800-1,000 per 100k, and property crime roughly 2,500-3,500 per 100k (approximate, FBI and local reports; not verified this pass); vehicle theft and car break-ins are the main visitor risk, including at theme park and shopping lots. Hospitals: Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center, Sutter Solano Medical Center (Vallejo), NorthBay Medical Center (Fairfield). Hazards: Green Valley and Hayward-Rodgers Creek fault systems nearby (earthquake risk), wildfire smoke episodes in late summer and fall, grass fire risk on the surrounding hills, and winter shoreline flooding risk
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use ordinary big-city caution at night in parts of south Vallejo, sections along Sonoma Boulevard and Springs Road, and some blocks near Broadway and Tuolumne Street, where violent and property crime rates are higher than in the rest of the city. The waterfront, Mare Island and Hiddenbrooke are generally comfortable in daytime
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
