Where neighbouring Dieppe is mostly French, Moncton, the hub of New Brunswick, is more mixed: roughly a third of residents speak French, mostly Acadian, which makes it one of the most bilingual cities in Canada. About 80,000 people live in the city and over 150,000 in the wider area, and it has grown quickly as people moved in from other provinces.
Visitors come for the tidal bore on the Petitcodiac River, Magnetic Hill, and the Bay of Fundy coast, where Hopewell Rocks is about 40 km away and Shediac beaches about 25 km. Downtown has a growing food and music scene, and the Wildcats play hockey in winter. Living costs are below the Canadian average, though rents and home prices have jumped since 2021, and finding a rental can be tight. Crime is close to the national average, with some late-night trouble downtown. Winters are snowy with nor'easters and freezing rain, and it is not a big city, so expect to drive.

Web fetch of Statistics Canada pages was blocked (robots.txt), so population and area figures are recalled 2021 Census values (StatCan Focus on Geography pages found via search but not opened; lower confidence, newer estimates run higher). Population 79,470 (Moncton city) and 157,717 (Moncton CMA) are 2021 Census; land area 141.1 sq km. Newer estimates put the city and CMA notably higher, since Moncton is among the fastest-growing Canadian CMAs. 6.5
Good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 90; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Moncton's Crime Severity Index is around or slightly above the national average (roughly 80-100, approximate, Statistics Canada and Codiac RCMP data); main visitor risks are property crime, vehicle theft and break-ins, and some late-night incidents downtown. Health care: New Brunswick Medicare does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: The Moncton Hospital (Horizon Health Network), Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre (Vitalite, French-first with bilingual staff), Sackville Memorial nearby. Hazards: cold snowy winters with nor'easters (-5 to -15 C, ice), freezing rain, spring river flooding, Fundy tides and post-tropical storms in autumn. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use ordinary caution late at night in parts of downtown around Main and Botsford streets and along some transit corridors, and in some lower-income sectors of the North End and Sunny Brae with higher property crime; most visitor areas are generally safe. Tidal bore and Petitcodiac riverbank mud are hazardous to enter, and Hopewell Rocks tide times must be checked
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
