The Mi'gmaq called the place Nepisiguit, after the salmon river that runs through it. Bathurst today is a bilingual city on Chaleur Bay in northern New Brunswick, with about 12,000 people in town and many more around it. Roughly half of residents speak French and half English.
Summer is the best time. Youghall Beach and its boardwalk are the local swimming and strolling spot, and Daly Point Nature Reserve is nearby. The Nepisiguit River is known for salmon fishing, and Nepisiguit Falls and Mount Carleton Provincial Park, about 90 km inland, are for serious hiking. Caraquet is about an hour up the coast. Costs are low, among the cheaper places in the country, though rents have started to rise. Crime is close to the national average. Winters are cold, snowy and icy, and rip currents can make the bay beaches risky for swimmers.
