Summers run hot in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge, where Charlottesville is a college town shaped by two things: Thomas Jefferson and the University of Virginia. Monticello and Jefferson's Rotunda are the big sights, and the pedestrian Downtown Mall is where the city gathers, with restaurants, live music, and outdoor tables. Wineries line the country roads nearby, and Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway are close for hiking and long drives.
About 44,000 people live in the city itself, and the wider area is around five times that. It is a pleasant, educated, outdoorsy place, but it is expensive for Virginia. Rents and home prices are well above the national average, and homes sell in a couple of weeks. Violent crime is moderate and has eased since a peak in 2022. Winters bring some ice, and ticks are common on trails. Richmond is about 70 miles east.
