Judge Isaac Parker's courthouse, jail and gallows, now a national historic site, are the one stop most people plan around in Fort Smith, a city of about 91,000 on the Arkansas River at the Oklahoma border with a strong Old West streak. It began as a military post in 1817, and Parker later became famous as the so-called Hanging Judge. The Bass Reeves monument adds another chapter of frontier history.
Day to day it is quiet, friendly and very affordable, with steady jobs in manufacturing and logistics. Downtown's Garrison Avenue has restaurants, Belle Grove has old Victorian houses, and the riverfront trail is good for a walk. Fayetteville is about an hour north and Tulsa about two hours away. On the downside, violent crime is above the national average for a city this size, so use normal care after dark. Spring storms bring tornado risk and hail, and summers are hot and humid.
