In 1960 the Woolworth's sit-ins put Greensboro on the map, and the International Civil Rights Museum is built around the original lunch counter. This mid-sized North Carolina city of about 310,000 in the Piedmont sits roughly between Charlotte and Raleigh. It is the one stop worth planning around. Other visits include Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, the Science Center, the Weatherspoon Art Museum and the Tanger Center for shows.
Day to day it is low key and affordable, with housing well below the national norm. Downtown has become more walkable, First Fridays draw a crowd, and neighborhoods like Fisher Park and Lindley Park have leafy streets. The tradeoffs: violent crime is roughly double the national median, especially in parts of the east and southeast, and car break-ins are common. Summers are humid and spring pollen is heavy.

2.9
Poor · Data-based
About 918 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.
Safety overview
Violent crime about 918 per 100k (NeighborhoodScout, 2024 data, roughly 2x the US median); property crime and car theft above average; common visitor risks are car break-ins and theft from vehicles; hospitals: Moses Cone Hospital (Cone Health) and Wesley Long Hospital; hazards: summer heat and humidity, thunderstorms, occasional tropical remnants and winter ice storms, high spring pollen
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Higher-crime areas include parts of east and southeast Greensboro and some blocks along Summit Avenue and Randleman Road; use normal urban caution downtown late at night and keep cars locked because vehicle break-ins and thefts are common; most visitor districts are generally fine
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
