Overview

About 190,000 people live in Huntington Beach, Surf City USA, a coastal Orange County city with a long pier, a strong surf culture, and a steady flow of locals in flip-flops. The US Open of Surfing takes over the beach each summer, and even on a quiet Tuesday you will see surfers in the water and cyclists on the coastal path.

Most visitors head to the pier, Pier Plaza and Main Street for food and shopping, with the International Surfing Museum tucked in nearby. Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is a good spot for birds and walking, and Huntington Central Park is popular with families. Huntington Harbour has the waterfront homes, and Newport Beach and Laguna are both a short drive. It is expensive, one of the pricier places in the country, and home prices are very high even by California standards. Crime is low compared with larger California cities, though car break-ins near beach parking are common. Rip currents are the main hazard in the water, and summer weekends bring crowds.

              Very good · Data-based

About 225 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.

              Safety overview

Violent crime is low relative to large California cities (roughly 200-250 per 100k, approximate); main visitor risks are car break-ins and theft from beach parking areas, plus lost items on crowded weekends. Hospitals: Huntington Beach Hospital (Memorial), Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center, Hoag Hospital Newport Beach. Hazards: rip currents (lifeguards on duty, swim near towers), sunburn, earthquake zone, coastal flooding at very high tides, occasional wildfire smoke, Santa Ana wind events in fall, and beach water quality advisories after rain or oil spill events

              Local notes

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

Nothing of particular note; the city is generally safe. Use ordinary caution on Main Street and the pier late at night on summer and holiday weekends when crowds and alcohol are heavy, and around Beach Blvd motels after dark
