Watch Winnipeggers make the 200-kilometer drive to Kenora for their cottages each summer. It is a lake town of about 15,000 in northwestern Ontario, close to the Manitoba border, and it is really about Lake of the Woods, the huge island-filled lake at its door. The harbourfront is the center of things, with the giant Husky the Muskie statue, cruises on the MS Kenora, and Harbourfest in July. People come to fish for muskie and walleye, swim at Anicinabe Park, or drive out to Rushing River Provincial Park.
Housing is cheaper than in Toronto, though lakefront property is not. The honest tradeoffs are that Kenora has one of the higher crime rates among Ontario cities, with visible street disorder downtown tied to drugs and alcohol. Winters are long and cold, and the nearest big city is a long drive.

Population 14,967 (2021 Census), area 211.65 sq km, elevation about 409.7 m (rounded to 410) and coordinates were read on Wikipedia (Kenora). Time zone is Central (America/Winnipeg) as recalled; Kenora has long observed Central time. visitor_website and event_calendar are City of Kenora URLs guessed from the city's site pattern and not opened or confirmed; a regional tourism page (Kenora and Lake of the Woods) may differ. Web search and StatCan were not used. 2.4
Poor · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 200; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Kenora Police Service and Statistics Canada data show a Crime Severity Index well above the national average (roughly 150-250, approximate; among the higher rates for Ontario cities because of drug, alcohol and social service related policing); main visitor risks are property theft, street disorder and impaired driving. Health care: OHIP does not cover most visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Lake of the Woods District Hospital (Kenora). Hazards: cold winters (-15 to -35 C), Lake of the Woods ice, summer forest fire smoke, black bears, mosquitoes and blackflies, and boating accidents. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No significant visitor no-go areas; use ordinary caution late at night in parts of downtown Kenora near the Harbourfront bar strip and some social service sites where street disorder and drug use are reported; thin ice on Lake of the Woods in early winter and spring, and remote Highway 17 and Highway 71 in winter
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
