Steady sunshine is the claim to fame in Medicine Hat, a prairie city of about 63,000 on the South Saskatchewan River in southeast Alberta, which says it is the sunniest city in Canada. Its old nickname, the Gas City, comes from the natural gas beneath it. The Saamis Tepee, said to be the world's tallest, is the roadside landmark.
The town feels easygoing and unhurried. Medalta and the Historic Clay District tell the story of its pottery past, and the river valley has trails at Police Point Park and Echo Dale. Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park is about 70 km southeast, and Dinosaur Provincial Park is about 130 km west. The Exhibition and Stampede in July is the big event. It is among the most affordable cities in Alberta, with modest rent and homes well below Calgary prices. Crime is above the national average, mostly property crime, and hail and river floods happen.

Population 63,271 (city, 2021 Census) from the Medicine Hat Wikipedia page (fetched) reflecting Statistics Canada; land area 111.97 sq km, elevation 690 m and 1883/1898/1906 dates also from that page. Metro 73,022 is the Medicine Hat census agglomeration (CA) from memory and was not verified this pass, so lower confidence. StatCan Focus on Geography pages were found via search but blocked to fetch (robots). Medicine Hat has no separate tourism bureau URL that was seen in search results (a Tourism Medicine Hat Facebook page was seen), so the City of Medicine Hat site medicinehat.ca is used for both visitor_website and event_calendar. Fair · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 115; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Medicine Hat's Crime Severity Index has been above the national average (roughly 100-130, approximate, Statistics Canada), mostly property crime and drug-related offences; main visitor risks are car break-ins and vehicle theft. Health care: Alberta Health Care Insurance does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (main acute care). Hazards: hot dry summers (often 30 C and above), cold winters (-10 to -30 C possible), wind, summer hail and severe thunderstorms, grassland fires and wildfire smoke, South Saskatchewan River flooding (as in 2013). Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use ordinary urban caution late at night in parts of downtown around 3 Street SE and Toronto Street and along parts of Dunmore Road, where some public intoxication, drug use and theft occur; some older neighbourhoods have higher property crime rates but rarely draw visitors. Most visitor areas are generally fine day and night
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
