Phoenix is an hour and a half south of Prescott, yet summers here feel nothing like it, since the pine country of central Arizona sits about a mile up. It was the first territorial capital, and downtown still shows it: a courthouse plaza with big shade trees, and the saloons of Whiskey Row facing it. The town bills itself as Everybody's Hometown and hosts what it calls the world's oldest rodeo around the Fourth of July.
Day to day it is a city of about 48,000 with a lot of retirees, decent healthcare for its size, and trails close to town, including Thumb Butte and the lakes around the Granite Dells. Expect real winters with some snow, a wildfire season, and monsoon storms in late summer. Housing is expensive for Arizona, pushed up by retirees and buyers from the Phoenix area.
