Overview

Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design give Providence an arty, youthful energy. It is the small, dense capital of Rhode Island, with about 195,000 people packed into a compact city on the Providence River, and it sits about 50 miles from Boston, so it is a common choice for people who want a smaller, cheaper alternative.

The signature event is WaterFire, when braziers burn on the river on summer Saturday evenings. Federal Hill is the Italian food neighborhood, Thayer Street and Wickenden Street have the college-town cafes, and Benefit Street's Mile of History has some of the best colonial architecture in the country. Roger Williams Park and Zoo is a good family day, and Newport is a short drive. It is not cheap. Housing costs are high, and prices have kept rising while inventory stays tight. Violent crime is below the national median, but property crime is higher, and some South Providence and West End blocks deserve caution at night. Winters bring snow and nor'easters.
