Docks along the Annapolis Basin in western Nova Scotia keep Digby a small fishing port, known for its scallops. About 2,000 people live here. The scallop fleet still ties up at the wharf, and the Fundy Rose ferry crosses to Saint John, New Brunswick, in a little over two hours.
Scallop Days in early August is the main town party. The Wharf Rat Rally, a big motorcycle gathering, fills the streets in August and can get loud. Outside events it is quiet. Visitors also use Digby as a base for whale watching on Digby Neck and the islands, for Annapolis Royal about 35 kilometres away, and for the Acadian villages around Church Point, where you will hear French. Living costs are below the national average, though rentals are tight. Crime is low. The local hospital is small, with bigger ones in Yarmouth and Kentville.

Safety information is a guide from public data and our research, not a guarantee. Conditions change; check local news and official advice before you go.
8.1
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 58; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Crime is low; Digby Police and RCMP statistics show a Crime Severity Index below the national average (roughly 45-70, approximate); main visitor risks are property theft, impaired driving and event-weekend disorder. Health care: Nova Scotia MSI does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Digby General Hospital (Nova Scotia Health, small emergency department, limited hours at times), with larger hospitals at Yarmouth Regional and Valley Regional in Kentville. Hazards: dense fog, strong Bay of Fundy tides (up to about 9 m in Digby Gut), winter storms and freezing rain, coastal flooding, hurricane and post-tropical storm remnants in the fall. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night around the wharf, downtown bars and pubs during large events (motorcycle rally and festival weekends can be noisy and crowded); tidal mudflats and cliffs on the Digby Gut and Digby Neck coast have strong currents and very high tides, and winter storms can close the wharf
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
