Overview

The Dinosaur Capital of the World turns out to be Drumheller, a town that leans into the title with cheerful confidence. About 7,900 people live in the Red Deer River valley, surrounded by the strange eroded landscape of the Canadian Badlands. The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology is the main draw and a serious science museum, and you can climb inside the World's Largest Dinosaur for a small fee.

Beyond that, drive the Hoodoos Trail, explore the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site and take the Bleriot ferry along the Dinosaur Trail. The Canadian Badlands Passion Play draws crowds in July. Living here is affordable for Alberta, with a small local hospital, and Calgary is about 135 km away. Summers get hot and stormy, with rattlesnakes in the badlands, and winters are cold. Stay off the unstable slopes, since erosion and rockfall are real. Crime is around or a bit above the national average, mainly theft.
