Walk the old mills and canals and you are in the heart of Lowell, built in the 1820s as a planned textile city. With about 115,000 people, it sits on the Merrimack River roughly 30 miles from Boston, and the mill buildings now hold housing, restaurants and museums. Jack Kerouac was born here, and the city celebrates him every October.
The best way to see it is on foot and by canal boat through Lowell National Historical Park, followed by lunch downtown. The city has one of the largest Cambodian communities in the country, so the Southeast Asian restaurants and the August Water Festival are a real draw. The late July Lowell Folk Festival is free and very popular. UMass Lowell keeps the streets young. Costs are high, well above average though below Boston itself, and the market is tight. Some blocks in the Acre and Lower Highlands have more drug-related crime at night. Expect snowy winters, nor'easters and some spring flooding on the river.

About this data
Search returned only page listings, not full data, so values are lower confidence. City population is an approximate Census 2024 to 2025 estimate; metro 5034221 is the value supplied for the Boston-Cambridge-Newton MSA (shared with Boston, Lowell is not the anchor city). Elevation, coordinates, founding, hotel ranges, rent, home price, crime rates, tipping, some event names and distances are approximate or from general knowledge and not verified. Lowell's visitor bureau (Greater Merrimack Valley CVB) URL was seen only as a PDF, so the city cultural affairs page is used as visitor_website; URLs not load-tested.
