Moreno Valley, or MoVal to locals, is one of the Inland Empire's biggest cities, with about 214,000 people, sitting between Riverside and the desert road toward Palm Springs. It was incorporated in 1984 and grew up around March Air Reserve Base. This is a residential place first. Visitors mostly come for Lake Perris State Recreation Area just south, where you can boat, fish and camp, or for hiking at Box Springs Mountain Reserve and concerts at the Civic Center Amphitheater.
Housing costs are high by national standards, but it is one of the more affordable large cities in the Inland Empire, which explains the commuters. The downsides are clear. Summers pass 100F, brush fires threaten the hillsides, and the air quality is rated among the worst in the country. Vehicle theft and property crime are the main worries, especially along older corridors like Sunnymead and Perris Boulevard. Moreno Valley Ranch and Canyon Springs are quieter.

7.0
Very good · Data-based
About 370 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.
Safety overview
Crime is near typical California big-suburb levels, with vehicle theft and property crime the main visitor risk (approximate; exact 2024 rates not retrieved); Riverside County Sheriff provides police service under contract. Hospitals: Kaiser Permanente Moreno Valley, Riverside University Health System Medical Center (trauma, large), Loma Linda University Medical Center nearby. Hazards: extreme summer heat (100F+), Santa Ana wind and brush fire risk near the hills, San Jacinto Fault earthquake risk, ozone and particulate air pollution rated among the worst in the US
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Some older apartment and commercial corridors along Sunnymead and Perris Boulevard, and parts of Alessandro Boulevard near the older core, have more property and vehicle crime; use ordinary big-city caution at night. Master planned areas like Moreno Valley Ranch and Canyon Springs are generally quieter
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
