An hour up the coast from Los Angeles, Oxnard is Ventura County's biggest city, a farming and beach town. About 200,000 people live here, most of them Latino, and strawberry fields still run right up to the edge of town. It feels less polished than nearby Ventura or Santa Barbara, and that is part of its appeal. The beaches, roughly seven miles of them, are the main attraction, along with Channel Islands Harbor, where boats leave for Channel Islands National Park. Heritage Square and the Carnegie Art Museum cover history and art, and the California Strawberry Festival in May is the local highlight. Farm stands are a good way to eat well cheaply.
The cost is the hard part. Housing runs far above the national average, even by California standards it is steep, and rents are high for the wages many residents earn. Crime is a concern in parts of central and south Oxnard, with car break-ins the main visitor risk. Earthquakes, rip currents and fall wildfire smoke are the natural hazards.

Fair · Data-based
About 596 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.
Safety overview
Violent crime rate about 596 per 100k and property crime about 1,877 per 100k (FBI 2024 via AreaVibes; violent crime up sharply year over year in that data); vehicle theft and car break-ins are the main visitor risk. Hospitals: St. John's Regional Medical Center (Oxnard), Community Memorial Hospital (Ventura) nearby. Hazards: earthquakes, coastal flooding and tsunami zones near the harbor, wildfire smoke in fall, rip currents at beaches, pesticide spray notices near farm fields
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Some parts of central and south Oxnard away from the beach and harbor, including older commercial corridors and areas near Saviers Road and Oxnard Blvd, have higher violent and property crime; use ordinary big-city caution at night. Harbor, beaches, Heritage Square and RiverPark are generally comfortable for visitors in daytime
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
