Lunenburg's UNESCO old town is about 20 km from Bridgewater, Mahone Bay about 30, and Kejimkujik National Park about 45, which makes this a good base for the postcards nearby. The town calls itself the Main Street of the South Shore, and that is a fair description. About 8,800 people live along the LaHave River, and it is where the surrounding region comes to shop, see a doctor and run errands. It is not a postcard place itself.
In town you can walk the riverfront trail, visit the DesBrisay Museum and browse the Saturday farmers market. Living here costs less than most of Canada, but prices and rents have climbed fast since 2020 and vacancies are tight. Crime is near the national average. Autumn brings post-tropical storms, and winters mean freezing rain.
