Busy harbour town with a university crowd and a lively pub scene, Halifax is the biggest city on Canada's Atlantic coast, with about 440,000 people spread across the peninsula, Dartmouth and the suburbs around them. Come in summer, when the waterfront boardwalk fills up on evenings. The Citadel sits above downtown, the Maritime Museum and Pier 21 tell the story of arrivals by sea, and the ferry to Dartmouth is a cheap, pleasant ride.
Most visitors add a day trip to Peggy's Cove and its lighthouse. The North End has the best coffee and food, while the South End has the old Victorian streets near the universities. The catch is cost. Rents and home prices have climbed fast and now sit a bit above the national average. Winters bring nor'easters, fog is common, and the odd late-season storm reaches from the Atlantic. Crime is about average, with rougher blocks downtown.

Population is the 2021 Census figure (439,819) for Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), a large municipality including rural areas and about 5,476 km2 of land; the urban core is only about 238 km2. Metro is the 2021 Census Halifax CMA (465,703; CMA is larger than the HRM census subdivision in this summary, so treat as approximate). Latest official estimates are higher (Statistics Canada estimates put HRM above 500,000 by 2024), so 2021 is understated. Source values from Wikipedia summarizing Statistics Canada. Elevation, coordinates, founding, event months, hotel ranges, tipping, cost-of-living comparisons, rents, house prices, crime index values, airport distances and taxes are approximate or from general knowledge and not verified in this pass. Safety overview
Crime Severity Index for Halifax CMA is roughly near the national average (approximate, Statistics Canada 2023; not verified); main visitor risks are theft from vehicles and late-night downtown altercations. Provincial health insurance does not cover visitors from outside the province or country, so travel or out-of-province medical insurance is advisable. Emergency 911. Hospitals: QEII Health Sciences Centre (Halifax Infirmary), IWK Health Centre (children), Dartmouth General. Hazards: winter storms and nor'easters (November to April), post-tropical hurricane remnants (August to October, for example Juan 2003 and Fiona 2022), coastal flooding, fog, and cold Atlantic swimming water
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Some blocks of downtown Gottingen Street and parts of the North End, and pockets of Dartmouth North and Uniacke Square, have higher rates of street disorder and property crime; use ordinary big-city caution at night around Barrington Street bar closing time. Waterfront and South End are generally comfortable
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
