Start in the fields, because Saint-Hyacinthe takes farming seriously. It sits on the Yamaska River, about an hour east of Montreal. The city calls itself Quebec's agri-food capital, with research institutes, a big August agricultural fair, and a food scene that leans on the fields around it. About 57,000 people live here, and nearly everyone speaks French.
Day to day it is a practical, unfussy place. You can walk the old downtown around the cathedral, ride the Route verte, or visit the Jardins Daniel A. Seguin a few minutes out of town. The regional wine and food routes of the Monteregie are close by, and Montreal is an easy drive when you want a bigger city. Housing is affordable for the region, and crime runs near or below the national average. Winters are cold and icy, and English is not widely spoken, so a little French goes a long way, especially at the hospital.

About this data
Population 57,239 and land area 188.85 sq km are 2021 Census figures read from the Wikipedia article for Saint-Hyacinthe. population_metro 58,000 is a rough recalled/inferred figure for the census agglomeration (Wikipedia showed only 2016, 56,794, and no 2021 figure was found), so this is a weak data point. Wikipedia and Wikipedia list pages did not give 2021 CA data. visitor_website https://www.tourisme-st-hyacinthe.ca/ is recalled and was not confirmed by a fetch; event_calendar uses the same tourism page (no separate calendar seen). Event names and months, elevation, coordinates (rounded from Wikipedia degrees-minutes or recalled), hotel ranges, cost of living, crime index, rent, home prices and distances are approximate or from general knowledge and not verified.
