Vancouver, Washington, sits across the Columbia River from Portland, and the two share a metro area and a lot of daily traffic. This one has about 200,000 people, a real history (Fort Vancouver dates to 1825), and a calmer feel than its neighbor. Many people live here for the tax angle: Washington has no state income tax, and Oregon has no sales tax, so locals cross the bridge to shop.
Downtown around Esther Short Park has a good Saturday farmers market, and the revitalized waterfront has new restaurants and open space. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and the Pearson Air Museum cover the history, and the Columbia River Gorge and Mount St. Helens are day trips. Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge is close for birding. Housing is expensive, though the market has cooled a bit. Crime is moderate, mostly car break-ins and property theft, with more trouble along the Highway 99 corridor. Winters are gray and wet, and the region faces long-term earthquake risk and smoke from late summer wildfires.
