Wetaskiwin takes its name from a Cree phrase meaning hills of peace, and it sits about 70 km south of Edmonton in central Alberta. It is a railway-born farm town of about 12,600 people, with a taste for old machinery, summer car shows and a Rod Run. The main attraction is the Reynolds-Alberta Museum, a large collection of vintage cars, machinery and aircraft that is also home to Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame. Downtown has murals and heritage buildings along Main Street, and Pigeon Lake and Battle Lake are the usual summer escapes. Maskwacis, about 25 km away, hosts powwows in summer.
It is one of the more affordable markets in central Alberta, cheaper than Edmonton. The tradeoffs are crime above the national average, mostly property theft and drug disorder around downtown and the highway strip, and cold winters with blizzards. The town has its own hospital, with Edmonton about an hour away for major care.

About this data
Population 12,594 (City of Wetaskiwin, 2021 Census) and area 18.75 sq km, elevation 760 m, dates and coordinates were read from Wikipedia. Wetaskiwin is not shown as a Census Metropolitan Area or agglomeration in what I could see, so population_metro equals the city figure (County of Wetaskiwin No. 10 is separate). visitor_website and event_calendar are the City of Wetaskiwin homepage: I did not confirm a dedicated tourism site or events subpage, so both URLs are unconfirmed beyond the city domain. Wetaskiwin RCMP data indicate crime rates above the national average for property crime and crime severity (Crime Severity Index roughly 100-150, approximate and not confirmed); main visitor risks are vehicle theft, break-ins and drug-related disorder. Health care: Alberta Health does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hazards: cold winters (-15 to -30 C, blizzards), summer hail, tornadoes and thunderstorms in central Alberta, grass fires. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night downtown and around some motels and the Highway 2A strip where property crime and drug use are periodically reported; winter highways can be icy
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
