The Airdrie Festival of Lights is a winter fixture in Airdrie, a fast-growing city of about 74,000 just north of Calgary, and most people who live here treat it as a bedroom community. It began as a railway siding in 1889, and its newer areas like Cooper's Crossing and Windsong are full of young families. Calgary is about 35 km south, and Banff is roughly 120 km west.
There is not a lot for visitors. You would come for the Nose Creek pathways, the small Main Street shops, and the July pro rodeo, and then drive on to Calgary or the mountains. The appeal for residents is space, newer homes and lower prices than the big city, though costs are slightly above the national average and homes have gone up a lot since 2021. Crime is mostly property theft and below the Alberta average. Winters are cold with chinook swings, and summer hail is a real hazard.
