The Airdrie Festival of Lights is a winter fixture in Airdrie, a fast-growing city of about 74,000 just north of Calgary, and most people who live here treat it as a bedroom community. It began as a railway siding in 1889, and its newer areas like Cooper's Crossing and Windsong are full of young families. Calgary is about 35 km south, and Banff is roughly 120 km west.
There is not a lot for visitors. You would come for the Nose Creek pathways, the small Main Street shops, and the July pro rodeo, and then drive on to Calgary or the mountains. The appeal for residents is space, newer homes and lower prices than the big city, though costs are slightly above the national average and homes have gone up a lot since 2021. Crime is mostly property theft and below the Alberta average. Winters are cold with chinook swings, and summer hail is a real hazard.

7.8
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 65; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Airdrie's police-reported crime (RCMP) is mostly property crime such as theft from vehicles; the Crime Severity Index is generally below the Alberta average (approximate, Statistics Canada). Health care: Alberta Health Care Insurance does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Airdrie Regional Community Health Centre (urgent care, no full emergency trauma); Foothills Medical Centre and Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary. Hazards: cold winters (-20 to -30 C possible, Chinook swings), summer hail and severe thunderstorms (hail alley), tornado risk, wildfire smoke, icy highways. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas are widely flagged for visitors; take normal precautions late at night near Main Street bars and around the Highway 2 commercial corridor, and lock vehicles and remove valuables because property crime and vehicle theft are the main issues
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
