Bring both skis and a swimsuit to Vernon, at the north end of the Okanagan Valley, a city of about 45,000 with nearly 70,000 in the wider area. It is less polished than Kelowna and more down to earth, with a mural-covered downtown, orchards, and three lakes within easy reach. Kalamalka Lake, with its turquoise water, is the star, and Silver Star Mountain gives the town a real ski season and a summer bike park.
Days here revolve around the outdoors. You can swim at Kal Beach, hike the provincial park trails, visit the O'Keefe Ranch heritage site, or drive to nearby wineries and cideries. The Saturday farmers market runs through the warm months, and the Winter Carnival is in February. The price of that scenery is real. Housing is expensive for Canada, especially houses, and the crime rate is above the national average, with street disorder downtown and car break-ins at trailheads. Summers can bring wildfire smoke and intense heat.

Safety overview
RCMP and Statistics Canada data put Vernon's Crime Severity Index above the national average (roughly 100-120, approximate); main visitor risks are vehicle break-ins, property theft and street disorder downtown. Health care: BC MSP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Emergency 911. Hospital: Vernon Jubilee Hospital (Interior Health). Hazards: summer wildfires and smoke (July to September), extreme heat, winter road conditions on Highway 97 and Silver Star Road, rattlesnakes and bears on trails
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary urban caution late at night in parts of downtown Vernon near 30th Avenue and the Highway 97 motel strip where street disorder and drug use are reported; do not leave valuables in vehicles at trailheads
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
