Inland in southeast British Columbia, Cranbrook is the main city of the East Kootenay and a railway town that grew up when the CPR came through in 1898, and sunshine is easy to find. About 20,000 people live here, with roughly 26,000 in the wider area. The Rockies rise to the east.
It is a practical regional hub, with a hospital, shops, and the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel in restored train cars. Most of the fun is outside town. Kimberley's ski resort and nature park are about 30 km away, Fort Steele Heritage Town about 16 km, Fernie about 100 km, and lakes and hot springs fill out the summers. Housing is moderate for BC. The downsides are crime above the provincial average, mostly property theft and car break-ins, cold winters with icy highways, and wildfire smoke in late summer. Calgary is about 400 km away.

Safety overview
Crime Severity Index for Cranbrook is above the BC average, driven by property crime (roughly 100-130 in recent years, approximate); main visitor risks are vehicle break-ins and theft. Health care: BC MSP does not cover visitors from other countries and other provinces bill separately, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospital: East Kootenay Regional Hospital (Interior Health) with 24-hour emergency. Hazards: cold winters (-10 to -25 C, snow and black ice on highways), wildfire smoke in July to September, black and grizzly bears in nearby trails, avalanche terrain in backcountry. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night downtown around some bars, Baker Street, and parts of Cranbrook Street North where street disorder and drug-related activity are reported; be careful on Highway 3/95 in winter
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
