Snow settles on the alpine gables in Kimberley each winter, which suits the Bavarian-themed town of the Rockies, a former mining community that dressed up in the 1970s after the Sullivan Mine wound down. About 8,100 people live here at around 1,120 m, and the pedestrian Platzl in the middle has the giant cuckoo clock everyone photographs.
What makes it worth a visit is the outdoors. Kimberley Alpine Resort has skiing in winter and mountain biking in summer, the Nature Park has plenty of trails, and Wasa Lake and St. Mary Lake are close. There is a real festival calendar too, from the winter carnival to Julyfest and Oktoberfest. Day to day it feels relaxed and small, with Cranbrook, about 25 km away, handling the hospital and big shopping. Crime is low. Winters are cold and snowy, wildfire smoke can show up in summer, and rentals are scarce and getting pricier.

Population 8,115 (City of Kimberley, 2021 Census), area 60.51 sq km, elevation 1,120 m, coordinates (Wikipedia gives 49.6697 N, 115.9775 W rounded from 49 40 11 N, 115 58 39 W) and incorporation date from Wikipedia. Kimberley is not part of a CMA, so population_metro is set equal to the city population (Cranbrook CA exists nearby but Kimberley is likely a separate agglomeration below the threshold; not verified). visitor_website kimberleybc.ca/visit and event_calendar kimberleybc.ca/events are recalled city pages that were not opened or confirmed; Kimberley Tourism or Tourism Kimberley may be the actual visitor site. 7.8
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 65; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Kimberley RCMP; crime is low (Crime Severity Index at or below the BC average, roughly 50-80, approximate); visitor risks are mainly winter driving, ski injuries and wildlife encounters. Health care: BC MSP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook (about 25 km), Kimberley Health Centre with limited services. Hazards: cold snowy winters (-10 to -25 C), avalanche and tree well risk off-piste, summer wildfires and smoke, bears and cougars, and slippery mountain highways. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas to avoid; use ordinary caution late at night in parts of Marysville and downtown bars; take care on icy roads and steep trails, keep wildlife distance (black bears, grizzly bears, cougars) and avoid backcountry and avalanche terrain without training and gear
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
