Overview

Around ten thousand people live in Quesnel, and the wider area holds about twice that, so it is the kind of place where you run into neighbours at the grocery store. It began as a gold rush settlement in 1859 where the Fraser and Quesnel Rivers meet, and forestry and pulp have carried it since. The riverfront trail and the long timber footbridge over the Fraser are the local landmarks.

Visitors mostly come for the Cariboo. Barkerville Historic Town is about 80 km east and is open through the summer, and the Bowron Lake canoe circuit is around 120 km away. Billy Barker Days in July is the big local event. Living here is inexpensive next to the coast, and homes cost far less than in Vancouver. The tradeoffs are a high crime rate, some downtown street disorder, cold winters, wildfire seasons that have brought evacuations, and uncertainty around the mills.

                  Poor · Data-based

Crime Severity Index around 155; the Canadian figure is about 80.

                  Safety overview

Quesnel RCMP data show a Crime Severity Index well above the national average (roughly 130-180, approximate) driven by property crime, drug offences and street disorder; main visitor risks are vehicle theft and break-ins. Health care: BC MSP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital (Northern Health, emergency room, small acute care); Prince George's University Hospital of Northern BC is the larger referral centre. Hazards: wildfire smoke and evacuations in summer (2017 and 2021 seasons affected the Cariboo), winter cold (-15 to -30 C), flooding on the Fraser and Quesnel Rivers in spring, black bears and grizzlies. Emergency 911

                  Local notes

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

No areas flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night downtown near Front Street where street disorder and drug use are occasionally reported; Highway 97 and Highway 26 (to Barkerville) can be icy or snowbound in winter, and wildlife (bears, moose) crosses roads at dawn and dusk
