Standing at the edge of the open pits and tailings that still shape Thetford Mines, you can see what asbestos left behind. The town was built on it, mined here from the 1870s until the industry collapsed. Today about 26,000 people live in this Appalachian town, roughly 105 km south of Quebec City. The area is now recognized as a UNESCO Geopark.
It is a modest, mostly French speaking place, and one of the cheapest in Quebec. Rent and homes are low, and prices have risen only from that low base. Visitors can tour the mineralogy and mining museum, swim and boat at Lac Aylmer, ski at Mont Adstock about 40 km away, or cycle the Appalachian routes. Winters are snowy, and English is limited, so basic French helps. Crime is low to average. Stay on marked trails, since old mine sites and tailings can be hazardous.

8.0
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 60; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Crime is low to average; Statistics Canada Crime Severity Index is around or below the national average (roughly 45-75, approximate); main risks are property theft, impaired driving and occasional drug-related incidents. Health care: Quebec RAMQ does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospital: Hopital de Thetford Mines (CISSS de Chaudiere-Appalaches, with emergency room; French-first, English less certain). Hazards: cold snowy winters (-10 to -25 C), freezing rain, spring flooding on small rivers, historic asbestos contamination near old mine tailings (do not disturb), summer thunderstorms. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night around the downtown bars; avoid unfenced open-pit mine edges, tailings and old mine sites off marked trails; winter driving on Route 112 and Route 267 can be hazardous in storms
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
