Climb up Sulphur Mountain by gondola and you see why Banff, a small town inside a national park, is as beautiful as the photos suggest. About 8,300 people live at 1,400 m in the Bow Valley, with Rocky Mountain peaks at the end of every street. Visitors also soak in the Upper Hot Springs, hike to Johnston Canyon, cruise Lake Minnewanka and ski at three nearby resorts. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are close, though you now need a shuttle to reach them.
Living here is another matter. Housing is very expensive because the park caps growth, and you generally have to work in town to be allowed to live in it. Many staff live in shared housing or commute from Canmore. Crime is low, but you share the streets with elk and the trails with bears, so carry bear spray and keep your distance. Calgary is about 126 km east.

Banff City Circle
For people considering Banff, visiting soon, living there for a while, or comparing it with somewhere else.
Town of Banff population 8,305 (2021 Census, Statistics Canada, via Wikipedia); area 4.08 sq km, elevation 1,400 m, incorporation 1990 from Wikipedia. Banff is not in a CMA or census agglomeration; population_metro 22,297 is my approximation for the Bow Valley (Banff 8,305 plus Canmore about 13,992 from 2021 Census, from general knowledge, not fetched), so treat as low confidence. Real estate from Zolo (July 2026, only 5 sales, so unreliable). Hotel, rent, cost-of-living, tipping, event months and park fees are approximate or general knowledge and not verified in this pass. Confidence medium-low. Official URLs were seen in search results but not load-tested.

Safety information is a guide from public data and our research, not a guarantee. Conditions change; check local news and official advice before you go.
8.0
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 60; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Crime is low and mostly petty theft and vehicle break-ins at trailhead lots (RCMP-policed; approximate); do not leave valuables visible in cars. Health care: Alberta Health Care does not cover visitors, so travel insurance is advisable and mountain rescue can be costly; Banff Mineral Springs Hospital in town, with the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary for major trauma. Hazards: bears, elk and cougars (carry bear spray and make noise), avalanche danger in winter backcountry, extreme cold, wildfire smoke and closures in summer, rapid weather changes, altitude and hypothermia risk in lakes. Emergency: 911; Banff Park Dispatch: 403-762-4506
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Nothing of particular note for crime; the main issue is wildlife and terrain. Keep at least 30 m from elk and 100 m from bears, avoid trails closed for bear activity, and avoid Banff Avenue crowds at peak hour and full parking lots at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake (use shuttles). Stay off frozen lakes unless locally advised
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
