Every July, Calgary throws the Stampede, ten days of rodeo, parades and pancakes, and the prairie city of about 1.3 million at the foot of the Rockies is famous for it. It grew up on cattle and oil, and the downtown towers reflect the energy business. Day to day it feels clean, sunny and easygoing. People bike and walk the Bow River pathways, spend time at Prince's Island Park, eat in Inglewood and Kensington, and use weekends to escape to Banff, about 130 kilometres west. Housing costs are moderate by Canadian standards, and there is no provincial sales tax.
Winters are cold, though Chinook winds can swing temperatures fast, and summer hailstorms are common enough to matter for your car. Watch for car break-ins and some street disorder near certain downtown train stops and East Village. Visitors need their own health insurance.

Crime Severity Index around 85; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Calgary's Crime Severity Index is around the national average and above the Alberta average for large cities (roughly 80-90, approximate, Statistics Canada); main visitor risks are car break-ins, vehicle theft, and incidents at some CTrain stations. Health care: Alberta Health Care Insurance does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Foothills Medical Centre (trauma), Peter Lougheed Centre, Rockyview General, South Health Campus, Alberta Children's Hospital. Hazards: cold winters (-10 to -30 C possible, Chinook winds swing temperatures), summer hail and severe thunderstorms (Calgary is in Canada's hail alley), spring flooding along the Bow and Elbow rivers, wildfire smoke. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use caution late at night in parts of the Beltline, East Village and downtown around the Calgary Drop-In Centre and along 7th Avenue transit stops (CTrain), where street disorder, drug use and occasional assaults are concentrated; some north-east and south-east communities have higher property crime but rarely draw visitors. Most visitor areas are generally fine
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
