Several mountain ranges come together in the valley in eastern British Columbia where Golden sits, and the town feels like it. About 4,000 people live here, and the town works as a base for the Rockies and Columbia Valley. Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has a gondola and serious skiing, and the Kicking Horse River is a well known rafting stretch. Yoho National Park is about 35 kilometres away.
Life here is outdoorsy and low key, with a farmers' market in summer and a lot of seasonal staff from abroad. Housing is the pinch point. Rentals are scarce, and buying is pricey for a town this size because of the resort and park nearby. Crime is low. The bigger risks are on Highway 1, which can close in winter storms, and in the backcountry, where avalanches and grizzlies are real. Calgary is about 260 kilometres east.

7.8
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 65; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Crime is low and mostly property crime and traffic-related, with the Crime Severity Index around the BC average or below (approximate); main visitor risks are highway collisions, backcountry accidents, avalanche danger and wildlife (grizzly and black bears). Health care: BC MSP does not cover out-of-province visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospital: Golden and District General Hospital (Interior Health), with an emergency room; major cases go to Calgary or Kelowna. Hazards: avalanches, rockfall, winter highway closures, wildfire smoke and floods in early summer (Blaeberry and Kicking Horse rivers), cold rivers. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No significant no-go areas; use ordinary caution late at night in downtown; Highway 1 through Rogers Pass and Kicking Horse Canyon is dangerous in winter storms and has frequent closures; avalanche terrain and grizzly bears in backcountry, and travel with proper equipment and guides
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
