Northern Ontario's largest city, Greater Sudbury has about 165,000 people spread over a huge area of rocky hills and more than 300 lakes. Nickel mining built it, the Big Nickel is its best-known landmark, and the hands-on Science North museum is another top stop. Ramsey Lake and Bell Park give the city a pleasant lakeside centre, and Kivi Park and the trail networks make it easy to get outdoors in every season. Killarney Provincial Park is about 100 km south.
Sudbury has one of Ontario's largest French-speaking communities, and services are available in both languages. Music and film fans come for the Northern Lights Festival Boreal in July and Cinefest in September. It is affordable by Ontario standards, with housing well below the south. In return, winters are long and often colder than minus 20, the nearest big city is hours away, and there is some downtown street disorder and vehicle theft. Black bears turn up near woods and trails.

6.9
Good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 82; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Crime severity index is near or somewhat above the Ontario average (approximate; Statistics Canada, not re-verified), mostly property crime and vehicle theft with some violence in downtown and older neighbourhoods; most visitor areas are comfortable. Health care: OHIP does not cover visitors, so travel insurance is advisable; Health Sciences North is the regional hospital and trauma centre for Northeastern Ontario. Hazards: winter storms and cold snaps (often -20C or colder), icy roads, black bears in wooded areas, ticks, mining blasts felt in some neighbourhoods, and occasional wildfire smoke in summer. Emergency: 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
None of particular note for visitors; most visitor areas are comfortable. Use ordinary care late at night around parts of downtown (Elgin and Cedar Streets), some blocks of the Flour Mill and Donovan areas, and avoid leaving valuables in vehicles at trailheads
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
