Pull into Hinton on the way to Jasper National Park and you find a forestry town of about 10,000 on the Athabasca River in Alberta's foothills, the last real stop before the park. The east gate is about 20 km away and Jasper townsite roughly 75 km, which makes it a cheaper base for the mountains. A pulp mill opened in 1957 and still drives the local economy.
Days here mean mountains. Maligne Lake and the Icefields Parkway are day trips, and the Athabasca River is good for rafting and fishing. Locally, the Beaver Boardwalk and the Maskuta trail network are handy for walking and biking. Housing is reasonable, though supply is tight because of forestry and energy workers. Crime is near the national average. Elk, bears and moose are common on the highways, winter driving can be icy, and wildfire is a real risk in the region, as the 2024 Jasper fire showed.

About this data
Population 9,817 (Town of Hinton, 2021 Census), area 33.32 sq km, elevation 990 m and coordinates were read from Wikipedia; note some sources quote 10,265 for a different census year or estimate. Hinton is not a Census Metropolitan Area or agglomeration, so population_metro equals the city figure. The Wikipedia founding data mixes 1928 (community founding) and 1956 to 1958 (incorporation); the earlier railway siding date is approximate. visitor_website and event_calendar are the Town of Hinton homepage: I did not confirm a dedicated tourism site or events subpage, so both URLs are unconfirmed beyond the town domain. Event names and months, some attraction names, hotel ranges, cost of living, crime index, rent, home prices and distances are recalled or approximate and not verified. All money in CAD.

Good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 90; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Hinton RCMP data indicate crime near or somewhat above the national average (Crime Severity Index roughly 70-110, approximate and not confirmed); main visitor risks are vehicle break-ins and drug-related petty crime. Health care: Alberta Health does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospital: Hinton Healthcare Centre (Alberta Health Services, emergency department); larger hospitals in Edmonton about 3 hours away. Hazards: wildfire and smoke (Jasper 2024 fire showed the regional risk), grizzly and black bears, winter driving (-10 to -30 C, snow, black ice on Highway 16), avalanche terrain in backcountry. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night downtown and around highway motels; the main hazards are wildlife on Highway 16 and 40 (elk, bear, moose), icy mountain highways and rapidly changing weather
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
