About 11,000 people live in Nelson, a lake town in southeastern BC, on Kootenay Lake, with a reputation as the artsy, outdoorsy heart of the Kootenays. Silver strikes created a mining camp in 1886, and downtown still holds hundreds of heritage buildings, which is why the film Roxanne was shot here.
Baker Street is the place to wander, with cafes, craft breweries and Touchstones Nelson, the local museum. Beyond town there is plenty to do: Whitewater Ski Resort about 20 km away, hiking at Kokanee Glacier, Ainsworth Hot Springs, and the climb up Elephant Mountain. Summer brings music and film events. It costs more than the Canadian average, and rentals are tight, so finding a place can be hard. Crime runs above the BC average for a city this size, mostly theft from vehicles and bikes. Wildfire smoke is common in late summer, and winters bring real snow.

About this data
Web search returned only links (StatCan pages were not opened; StatCan is robots-blocked), so all figures are recalled from memory: population 11,106 (Nelson city, 2021 Census) is recalled with moderate confidence. I am not certain whether a Nelson census agglomeration exists in 2021, so population_metro is set equal to the city figure per the rule (weakest data point). Area 11.7 sq km, elevation, coordinates, founding details, crime index, prices, rents and distances are approximate. visitor_website and event_calendar are Discover Nelson URLs recalled from memory and not confirmed loading (the /events path is a guess). Event names and months are approximate. All money in CAD.

Crime Severity Index around 120; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Crime Severity Index for Nelson runs above the BC average for a city its size, driven by property crime (roughly 100-140, approximate); main risks are theft from vehicles and unattended bikes. Health care: BC MSP does not cover visitors from other countries and other provinces bill separately, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospital: Kootenay Lake Hospital (Interior Health) with emergency room. Hazards: wildfire smoke in July to September, snow and avalanches, black bears, cold winters (-5 to -15 C), rockfall on Highway 3A and lake ice conditions. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night on Baker Street and near the waterfront and some downtown lanes where street disorder and property crime are reported; avoid backcountry without avalanche gear and route knowledge
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
