Popular with cottagers, Huntsville sits about 225 km north of Toronto and is the biggest town in Muskoka and the main gateway to Algonquin Provincial Park, about 45 km east. About 21,000 people live in the town, spread across a large area of lakes and forest.
It is classic Ontario cottage country. Main Street has murals, shops and restaurants, and lakes like Fairy and Vernon sit at the edge of town. Visitors canoe and kayak, hike at Arrowhead Provincial Park, ride the steam train at Muskoka Heritage Place, ski at Hidden Valley, and drive the fall colours in late September. Crime is low. The cost is housing, which is pricey, with rentals scarce because of the cottage economy and waterfront costing far more. Winters are cold and snowy, summer weekends bring heavy traffic on Highway 11, and there are black bears, ticks and blackflies to plan for.

8.3
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 55; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Crime is low in Huntsville (Huntsville OPP; Statistics Canada CSI below or near the national average, roughly 40-70, approximate); main visitor risks are vehicle theft and break-ins, impaired driving and boating accidents. Health care: Ontario OHIP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospital: Huntsville District Memorial Hospital (Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare), with emergency department. Hazards: cold snowy winters (-10 to -25 C, lake-effect snow squalls), black bears, ticks and blackflies in summer hikes, forest fires occasionally, thin lake ice. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas to avoid; use ordinary caution driving Highway 11 and Highway 60 at peak weekend traffic times and in winter storms; avoid thin ice on lakes and do not go into Algonquin backcountry without a plan; parts of downtown have occasional late-night disorder
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
