About 190 km north of Toronto, Bracebridge sits on the Muskoka River in the middle of cottage country, and it calls itself the Heart of Muskoka. Waterfalls run right through town, Muskoka Brewery is based here, and the district municipality has its seat in Bracebridge. About 17,000 people live here, though summer weekends feel much bigger.
Visitors come for boat cruises, swimming, Santa's Village in season and day trips to Algonquin, about 100 km away. Fall is a good time for the Fall Fair and the studio tour. The tradeoffs are real. Housing is expensive for a small town because of cottage demand, and rentals are scarce. Winters are cold and snowy, and Highway 11 gets crowded on summer weekends and hosts deer and moose at dusk. Crime is low.

8.5
Excellent · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 50; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Bracebridge is patrolled by the Ontario Provincial Police (Bracebridge detachment); Statistics Canada Crime Severity Index is below the national average (roughly 40-60, approximate); main visitor risks are boating accidents, drowning, car collisions with wildlife, and theft from cottages and vehicles. Hospital: South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge (emergency room), Huntsville District Memorial and Royal Victoria Regional (Barrie) for larger care. Hazards: cold snowy winters (-10 to -25 C), freezing rain, blackflies and ticks in season, forest fires occasionally. Health care: Ontario OHIP does not cover visitors from other countries, so travel health insurance is advisable (Canadians from other provinces are generally covered under reciprocal billing). Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas to avoid; use ordinary caution late at night in the downtown bar strip; do not walk on river and lake ice in early or late winter; watch for deer and moose on Highway 11 and Muskoka Road 118 at dusk, and for heavy weekend cottage traffic on Highway 11 in summer
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
